PROGRAM NOTE: One of my own frustrations with a lot of music is the “stringing together of ideas” rather than actually sticking with them and seeing how much you can get out of one single idea. This, after all, is the core concept that made Bach’s fugues and Beethoven’s symphonies great.
So when Duo Clarion asked me for a short piece for them, I had two initial thoughts: 1) They are awesome, so how can I do something virtuosic in a short period to show off their skills? And 2) I wonder how long I can stay with the idea of relentless 16th notes flowing by and keep it interesting?
This perpetual-motion concertino for clarinet and piano answers those questions with a 5 1/2-minute barrage of active textures.
